Garcinia Cambogia and Ceylon Cinnamon are both increasingly popular weight loss supplements that are currently available on the market. In an over saturated market where consumers are forced to navigate through both artificial supplements and scams, both supplements stand out in the crowd.

Furthermore, with equal assurances of the effects of both supplements from friends and distributors, new consumers may be sandwiched in the middle of which supplement is truly worth their time and money.

While both supplements are natural and have positive effects, Garcinia Cambogia benefits best that of Ceylon cinnamon overall.

Garcinia Cambogia Extract

Garcinia Cambogia was first discovered in the 1960s and is a sweet pumpkin-like fruit that causes weight loss via its active component Hydroxycitric acid (HCA).

This natural fruit extract has been studied extensively since for its efficacy on weight loss and found to generally have positive effects on groups ingesting it relative to placebo test groups.

The active component HCA works to reduce an individual’s weight in by more than one interaction with the body. The primary way HCA induces weight loss is by inhibiting citrate lyase enzymes in the body. Citrate lyase enzymes function to convert carbohydrates such as starches and sugars in the body to fat.

When HCA inhibits this enzyme, the body subsequently converts fewer carbohydrates into fat and instead into the resources are used for energy production. Exercising causes the body to burn fat.

Due to HCA causing the body to produce less fat to replace fat burned through exercising, the body experiences a reduction in fat over time leading to weight loss. Garcinia Cambogia reduces a person’s appetite and raises their mood.

Garcinia Cambogia also reduces an individual’s appetite by a currently unknown pathway in the body. The most accepted cause for HCA’s appetite reduction effects on the body is linked to a hormone called serotonin. Serotonin, commonly known as the feel-good hormone, has many functions within the body.

Many studies have concluded higher serotonin levels in the body induces a feeling of satiation causing the feeling of feeling “fuller”. Serotonin is produced however only when the body ingests sweet or starchy carbohydrates.

HCA affects serotonin levels via a precursor to serotonin, 5-hydroxytrytophan, to increase serotonin levels. This increase in serotonin levels leads to reduced appetite as well as an elevated mood.

Ceylon Cinnamon

Ceylon cinnamon is a delicate sweet spice made from the bark of a Sri Lanka native tree. The weight loss effects of Ceylon cinnamon has not been studied extensively.

A study published in “Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry” found that the cinnamon worked to induce weight loss in mice by causing the mice’s enzymes to inhibit the production mature “fat cells” known as adipocytes. These enzymes are found primarily in the stomach, allowing for a controlled loss of fat in the stomach.

Ceylon cinnamon controls blood sugar levels to regulate sugar to fat production. It can control blood sugar levels in the body by both regulating the body’s insulin levels and functioning as an insulin analog.

Insulin is a hormone in the body that regulates sugar uptake to prevent blood sugar levels from becoming too high or too low. Insulin functions by telling the body when it should convert sugar into either glycogen or fats.

By regulating the blood sugar levels in the body, Ceylon cinnamon regulates the amount of fat your body produces. Ceylon cinnamon has also been shown to reduce LDL cholesterol as a bonus effect.

Comparisons Between Garcinia Cambogia & Ceylon Cinnamon

When comparing the two supplements, both Ceylon cinnamon and Garcinia Cambogia are naturally occurring substances that help with weight loss. However, the efficacy of the different supplements has been studied to different extents.

Garcinia Cambogia has been studied much more extensively. Garcinia Cambogia has been shown to reduce weight by an average of 13 pounds in an eight-week period with exercise and correct dosage compared to those given placebo supplements in the same study.

For weight loss purposes, both Garcinia Cambogia and Ceylon cinnamon are safe and have the bonus effects of better mood and lower cholesterol respectively. For the best results when taking Garcinia Cambogia, make sure the supplement has high amounts of potassium and/or magnesium.
